BTCC Knockhill 2026: Sutton Extends Championship Lead

The Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship headed north of the border to Knockhill last weekend for Rounds 16–18. Scott Grant went along to the Scottish circuit to capture the latest three tin top races in the 2026 championship battle.

With 23 cars taking to the grid, Knockhill produced plenty of close racing, changing conditions and some impressive performances. Adam Morgan and Cataclean Plato Racing were particularly strong, while Ash Sutton once again demonstrated why he is the driver everyone is chasing.

The weekend began with Morgan taking victory in Saturday’s new-for-2026 qualifying race. In the reduced points (10 for first place, 1 point for 15th place) race Gordon Shedden was second and Daniel Rowbottom took the final podium place.

Race One: Morgan Leads Plato Racing One-Two

Adam Morgan converted his strong qualifying pace into a commanding victory in the opening championship race. Starting from pole, the Mercedes A35 Saloon led all 27 laps and resisted pressure to claim an impressive win.

Daniel Rowbottom completed a Cataclean Plato Racing one-two, while Gordon Shedden finished third. Ash Sutton recovered to fourth, with championship rival Tom Ingram completing the top five.

Morgan’s victory was particularly significant for Plato Racing, confirming that the Mercedes package has become a genuine front-running proposition as the season develops.

Race Two: Sutton Strikes Back

If Morgan had dominated the opening race, Sutton provided the response in Race Two. The NAPA Racing UK driver took victory after a superb drive through the field, finishing ahead of Rowbottom and Ricky Collard. Mikey Doble and Morgan completed the top five.

The result was hugely important for Sutton because Tom Ingram’s race ended in retirement. With the championship leader collecting another win while his closest rival failed to score, the points gap increased significantly.

Sutton’s performance also highlighted one of his greatest strengths: extracting a result when conditions and circumstances are against him.

Race Three: Chilton Finally Gets His Win

Tom Chilton saved the best until last, taking his first BTCC victory of 2026 and his 19th career win in the final race of the weekend.

Starting from reverse-grid pole, Chilton made no mistake and controlled the race from the front. Adam Morgan continued his excellent Knockhill weekend with second, while Dan Cammish completed the podium.

Dexter Patterson crossed the line in fourth place, with Charles Rainford completing the top five.

Championship Standings After Knockhill

Knockhill proved to be another highly productive weekend for Sutton. After 18 rounds, he leads the championship with 220 points, a remarkable 48-point advantage over Tom Ingram on 172. Dan Cammish remains third on 160, followed by Charles Rainford on 137 and Ricky Collard on 124.

BTCC Championship Summary

With four meetings remaining, Ash Sutton has opened a significant championship lead, with Tom Ingram his closest challenger. Sutton’s consistency has been crucial, regularly scoring strong points while his rivals have suffered costly setbacks.

Dan Cammish, Charles Rainford and Ricky Collard remain in the fight for the leading positions, while Adam Morgan’s impressive Knockhill weekend could signal a change in fortunes for Plato Racing.

In the team championship NAPA Racing UK are on 493 ahead of Team Vertu 333 and WSR 293. The BTCC now heads to Donington Park for Rounds 19–21 on August 22–23, with Sutton looking to strengthen his title advantage as the championship enters its final stages.
