Croft 2026: Cook, Sutton, and Doble Share the Victories

The British Touring Car Championship arrived at Croft for Rounds 22, 23, and 24 of the 2026 season, with the championship entering its decisive phase. With only nine races remaining after the North Yorkshire meeting, every point carried extra weight, particularly for Ash Sutton, who leads the Championship. 

The rest of the drivers are still hoping to prevent the NAPA Racing UK driver from claiming a record fifth BTCC crown and potentially with a record margin. The BTCC record, as it stands today, was set by Alain Menu in 1997 at 110 points; Sutton, after Croft, is on 115!

Croft delivered exactly the sort of weekend the championship needed. Josh Cook, Sutton, and Mikey Doble each took a victory, while changing conditions, penalties, incidents, and a dramatic final race ensured that the championship picture changed without ever losing its intensity.

Sutton left Croft with the biggest prize of all. His Race Two victory extended his advantage at the top of the standings, while several of his closest rivals failed to convert opportunities into significant points. 

Race One: Josh Cook Wins a Wet-Weather Thriller

The opening race immediately demonstrated why Croft remains such an entertaining BTCC venue. Wet conditions and continuing drizzle made the circuit difficult, with Josh Cook starting from pole after winning Saturday’s new-for-2026 qualifying race.

The Speedworks Corolla Racing Toyota made the best possible start, with Cook establishing control while the NAPA Racing UK Ford Focuses of Dan Cammish and Ash Sutton settled into the chase.

Tom Ingram had the pace to challenge for the win and actually crossed the finish line first. However, a five-second track-limits penalty dropped the reigning champion to third, handing Cook the victory by just 0.377 seconds from Sutton. Cammish completed fourth, while Ricky Collard produced another strong result for Team VERTU in fifth. 

The result was particularly valuable for Cook, who had started the weekend outside the immediate championship conversation but was now showing the sort of pace that could make a difference during the closing rounds.

For Ingram, meanwhile, it was another reminder that the smallest mistake can have a major impact when the championship is this tightly contested.

Race Two: Sutton Turns the Screw

If Race One belonged to Cook, Race Two belonged firmly to Ash Sutton. The NAPA Racing UK driver converted his pace into a controlled victory, leading home Daniel Rowbottom, Ricky Collard and teammate Dan Cammish. Charles Rainford completed the top five for West Surrey Racing.

Sutton’s victory was more significant than simply another win. It moved him to 55 career BTCC victories, putting him fifth on the championship’s all-time wins list and, more importantly, further away from the chasing pack in the 2026 title race. 

Sutton’s ability to collect big points while his rivals struggled to match his consistency has become one of the defining features of the 2026 campaign. Cammish remained Sutton’s closest challenger, but even another strong top-four finish could not prevent the gap from growing.

Race Three: Doble Wins as the Contenders Collide

The final race produced the most dramatic finish of the weekend. Mikey Doble took his third BTCC victory in an incident-packed contest that saw all of the major championship contenders become involved in trouble. The LKQ Euro Car Parts with Power Maxed Racing Audi emerged from the chaos to beat Tom Chilton and Gordon Shedden. Josh Cook recovered to fourth, with Adam Morgan completing the top five.

The race became a particularly costly affair for some of the championship contenders, with Sutton, Cammish, and Ingram all caught up in incidents. Doble kept his head while others lost theirs, turning a difficult reverse-grid race into another important milestone in his growing BTCC career.

BTCC Championship Analysis: Sutton in Control

The biggest story from Croft is not actually any of the three individual victories. It is the growing size of Ash Sutton’s championship advantage.

After Croft, Sutton leads the Drivers’ Championship with 424 points, with Dan Cammish second on 309 and reigning champion Tom Ingram third on 301. Ricky Collard sits fourth on 234, while Adam Morgan and Daniel Rowbottom are tied on 232. 

That gives Sutton a 115-point advantage over Cammish with three meetings still to run. In BTCC terms, that is a formidable lead.

Cammish has two victories and three second places this season, but Sutton’s extraordinary consistency has proved more important. Sutton has already collected eight wins and nine second places, giving him a points haul that his rivals have struggled to match. 

The interesting battle now moves further down the table. Ingram still has a mathematical route to the title, but the reigning champion needs a major turnaround. Behind him, Collard, Morgan, Rowbottom, Cook, and Doble are all involved in a fascinating fight for championship positions.

Cook’s Croft weekend was particularly noteworthy. A victory and fourth place strengthened his campaign, while Doble’s Race Three success moved him onto 213 points.

The remaining three meetings therefore have two stories running simultaneously: Sutton attempting to finish the job and the chasing pack fighting over the positions behind him.

The next stop is Silverstone on 26–27 September, followed by the season finale at Brands Hatch.

BTCC Croft 2026: The PistonClick Verdict

Croft delivered exactly what the BTCC does best: three different winners, changing conditions, close racing, and a championship that continues to produce stories throughout the field.

Cook showed the pace of the Toyota in difficult conditions, Sutton demonstrated once again why he is the driver to beat, and Doble grabbed the headlines with a composed drive through the chaos of Race Three.

But while the individual battles remain unpredictable, the championship itself is beginning to look increasingly familiar. Sutton has built a substantial advantage and now has three meetings in which to protect it.

For everyone else, the calculation is simple. They need Sutton to stop scoring heavily. So far in 2026, that has proved considerably easier said than done.
