BSB Oulton Park practice, qualifying and the races were held in changeable wet and windy conditions last weekend. Scott Grant braved the elements and went along to the Cheshire circuit to capture the action for us. The weather is an important factor when it comes to motorcycle racing. Evening out any advantages that the top teams might have. The weather could not only affect the weekend’s racing but the championship as a whole.

There are riders on the grid that relish the chance to get out and race in the rain. However, there are riders who are not so keen on the wet. Other riders, who have nothing to lose as they are too far down the championship leaderboard, see these tricky conditions as an opportunity to shine in the dark and gloomy weather. So they will push that little bit harder to get onto the podium that has eluded them so far this year.

A prime example of this was the fight for pole position. Charlie Nesbitt, Fraser Rogers and #79 Storm Stacey topped the qualifying session. Championship contender Bradley Ray was on the second row with Tommy Bridewell and Christian Iddon. The defending 2024 BSB Champion Kyle Ryde headed up the third row for race one.

BSB Oulton Park Race 1

A windy but dry race had the young guns on the front row of the grid. With the practice and qualifying being run in the wet, all of the riders had no data from the weekend in regard to dry weather tyres. This was going to be interesting; the young guns had the championship contenders right behind them on the grid. The lights went out and they were off but only for half a lap; the rain was back. Red flags waved and the riders headed back to the pits as the heavens opened.

The teams franticly changed tyres, adjusted suspension settings and looked to the skys to try and understand what the weather was going to do. Just about every combination of tyre choice could have been used on the wet but drying track. Josh Brookes and Leon Haslam got the right combination of intermediates slicing through the field. By lap eight they were battling for the lead, #91 Haslam held off Brookes until the final lap.

The DAO Racing Honda team had pulled it out of the bag with a bike set up for the weather conditions and a rider who wanted the to be back on the top step. Brookes celebrated his first win since 2023, Ryde was third increasing his BSB championship lead over Ray to 43 points. Race 1 was to be a mere aperitif for the final two races on Sunday.

BSB Oulton Park Race 2

For the start of race 2 see Race 1 but substitute weather for oil. Pitting for tyres in Race 1, Peter Hickman took himself out of getting a good result in Race 1 but he would start in P5 for Race 2. However, the LEW 8TEN Racing BMW decided to deposit its internal fluids over the track causing a red flag.

This took some time to clean up so a shortened 8 lap race was rescheduled. The grid positions were a little strange after Race 1. The riders best laps in Race 1 determine their grid position for Race 2, hence why Hickman pitted. Brookes on P1, Ray in 14th and Scott Redding dead last, this was going to be interesting.

Haslam and Iddon hit the front but Ray was on a mission to reduce the championship points gap with Ryde. Carving through the field Ray then took Iddon for second at Island and the leader Haslam at Knickerbrook. Holding onto the lead to the checkered flag #28 Ray had reduced to points gap to 31. Ryde was forth.

BSB Oulton Park Race 2

Sitting on pole for Race 3 Bradley Ray was in a great place to do what he did at the start of the season, put the hammer down leave the rest of the pack in his wake. The rest of the pack decided they were having none of that. The lead swapped round so many times, Ray then Haslam then Ryde then Haslam then on lap 11 Ray took the lead.

Hold on who is this, the come back kid #4 Scott Redding, who must had had three weetabix for lunch powered through on lap 15. Holding on for the final three laps Redding took the win with Ray 2nd and Haslam just holding 3rd from Storm Stacy by 0.026 of a second!
