Harewood HillClimb

Competitors of the Harewood Speed Hillclimb Championship were competing at Harewood Hill for the final two rounds, of the 2025 season, over the weekend of 20th and 21st September.

The Greenwood Cup and Mike Wilson Hillclimb meetings were Round’s seven and eight of the Harewood Speed Hillclimb Championship and Fastest Time of the Day Award Series which is organised by the BARC Yorkshire Centre on the longest hill in the UK.

Greenwood Cup Hillclimb

Also joining in on the action during the weekend were a number of competitors from the 500cc Owners Club. Along with competitors from the TR Register and MG Car Club.

Rain from start to well into Saturday night with only a couple of very brief spells when it stopped for a very short while but the track never got a chance to dry out and some of the drivers even reported that it was greasy with both standing and running water at different parts of the track.

With the two practice runs completed, the organisers went for a Timed run before the lunch-break but three-quarters away though the first batch of cars, the Clark of the course made a track inspection, due to all the water on the track and the run was postponed until after the lunch-break during which a number of trenches, were dug at the side of the track to try and clear some of the standing water.

After the lunch-break the first timed run continued but standing track-side the conditions didn’t seem to have changed that much for the better. Anyway some competitors only completed the practice runs and didn’t even take either of the timed runs on offer, due to the conditions.

Harewood Speed Hillclimb Championship

Leading the Harewood Speed Hillclimb Championship, Adam Riley was not on the entry list but with dropped scores to also take into account and the very wet track meaning that times would be some-way off the bogey times set for each of the different classes and therefore the points on-offer for the Championship.

However the championship leading car did take to the hill with Doug Mitchell at the wheel. Adam and Doug normally share the car but Doug had it all to himself on Saturday.

Fastest Time of the Day was set by James Hudson driving his 4 wheeled drive Subaru Impreza, which was very suited the track conditions.

Anthony Middleton driving his Westfield set the second fastest time. While John Prickett driving his Radical PR6 set the third fastest time, both only 2 wheel drive.

Mike Wilson Hillclimb

On Sunday the Mike Wilson Hillclimb had a total start entry of 138 cars, including some of the competitors from the 500cc Owners Club, TR Register and MG Car Club. Within the MG Car Club was Declan Clark, another of the Junior Sprint and Hillclimb competitors. This was set-up by Motorsport UK to provide new opportunities for young drivers (14-16 year old’s) into the sport of Sprint and Hillclimbing using 1400cc standard road going cars with no modifications, other than safety and road legal tyres. Declan finished second on Saturday and fourth in class on the Sunday. He was up against larger engined MG’s in his class.

Sunday morning’s weather looked miles better that Saturday’s if a little cooler and not a cloud in the sky at the start of the first Practice run. Though the clouds did roll in later but thankfully no rain meaning once that the track dried out from yesterdays rain a couple of drivers managed to set PB’s but no class records would be set.

Competition got underway with the two practice runs, followed by a timed run before the lunch break, however the second to last car had an issue which left an large oil slick on the track from the middle part of Esses all the way to Country corner. The car was recovered and the Marshals set about dressing the track into a very late lunch-break. Though the re-start after the lunch-break was delayed due to additional dressing of the oil and the Clarke of the course inspecting the track before the all clear was given. A re-run for Stephen Owen driving his Westfield, was now the last car in the first timed run. Stephen had to wait until after the lunch-break and the redressing of the track before been able to take his first timed run. The rest of the competitors, then followed with their second timed runs.

Harewood Hillclimb Championship.

Massive congratulations to Adam Riley on making it five consecutive Harewood Speed Hillclimb Championships. Adam having lead from the first event of the season (Spring National meeting), back in April and also setting new class records at the following meetings, Spring National, Harewood Open (May) and Yorkshire Speed (August) during the 2025 season for Class 1A, Road Cars series Production up to and including 1400cc in the front wheel drive VW UP.

Adam has now won the Harewood Speed Hillclimb Championship, in three different cars. He first took to the Yorkshire Hill driving his own rear wheel Honda S2000, then he shared Karl Jackson’s  Honda S2000 before switching to the front wheeled drive VW UP that he shares with his father in law Doug Mitchell.

Henry Moorhouse driving his Westfield finished in second place. Having set a new class record in 2A for Road Cars, Specialist Production Kit up to and including 1700cc, during the Yorkshire Speed Hillclimb meeting.

He then move up a class to Class 2B for Road Cars, Specialist Production Kit over 1700cc at the Summer Championship meeting. Having replaced his Honda powered Westfield with a two litre Duratec engined Westfield. Other than the Greenwood Cup meeting Henry has won both classes in which he has competed in, this season.

Mark Teale driving his highly modified Suzuki Swift, in Class 3A for Modified Series Production cars up to and including 1400cc finished in third place. Having won the class six times.

Fastest Time of the Day was set by David Tatham driving his DJ Firehawk, with Morgan Jenkins driving the Pilbeam MP97 second and Dave Banner driving his Westfield Megabusa setting third fastest.

Fastest lady up the hill was Sandra Tomlin driving the Pilbeam MP97 (shared car with Morgan
Jenkins)

Fast Time of the Day Award Series (FTD Award Series)

2024 FTD Award Series winner David Tatham driving his DJ Firehawk first track appearance was at the July British Hillclimb Championship, though this was not a Harewood Championship meeting. His first Harewood Championship event was at the Yorkshire Speed Hillclimb meeting.

John Prickett driving his Radical PR6 wins the 2025 Harewood FTD Award Series. David Tatham driving his DJ Firehawk takes second place. This was quite an achievement as he has only competed in four of the eight events, though only the six best scores count for the FTD Award Series.

Mark Hemingway driving the Force TA finishes in joint third place, with Stephen Owen driving a Westfield and Anthony Middleton also driving a Westfield. Mark was not competing this weekend but his car was being driven by his son Fraser.
