Ducati Dominance Continues as Bulega Extends His Lead at Donington Park
Donington Park once again proved why it remains one of the standout venues on the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship calendar. Blessed with glorious summer sunshine and 50000 fans, the iconic Leicestershire circuit delivered a weekend of close racing, dramatic overtakes and world-class Superbike action.
Arriving at WorldSBK Donington Park, Nicolo Bulega had established complete control over the 2026 WorldSBK Championship. The Aruba.it Racing Ducati rider had claimed victory in all 21 races held across the opening seven rounds, extending an extraordinary winning streak to 25 consecutive races dating back to the closing stages of the 2025 season. That remarkable run finally came to an end in Saturday’s opening race, where teammate Iker Lecuona delivered the only defeat of Bulega’s campaign so far.

However, the championship leader responded exactly as champions do, bouncing back to win both Sunday’s Superpole Race and Race 2. By the end of the weekend, Bulega had amassed 23 victories from the opening 24 races of the 2026 season, further strengthening his grip on the championship as the title race entered its second half.

WorldSBK Donington Park – The British Riders
One of the biggest disappointments of the weekend came before the racing had even begun. British rider Tarran ‘Taz’ Mackenzie looked set for his strongest WorldSBK performance of the season after climbing to fifth fastest during Friday’s Free Practice 2. However, a violent crash under braking at Goddards brought out the red flags and ended his home round prematurely. Mackenzie was later ruled unfit after suffering concussion, a fractured left ankle and a suspected collarbone fracture, denying the Donington crowd the chance to see one of Britain’s leading riders compete in front of his home fans.
However, there was plenty for the home crowd to celebrate with the return of #65 Jonathan Rea. Sam Lowes remained firmly in the hunt for podiums throughout the meeting, twin brother Alex Lowes continued Bimota’s impressive resurgence with another pair of strong finishes, while #46 Tommy Bridewell delighted British fans with a hard-earned top-five finish in Race One.

Superpole Delivers an All-Ducati Front Row
Qualifying on Saturday morning confirmed Ducati’s formidable pace around Donington Park, with Nicolo Bulega securing another Superpole position after producing the fastest lap of the session. Rookie sensation Yari Montella continued his remarkable season by qualifying second for Barni Spark Racing, while local favourite #14 Sam Lowes claimed an excellent third on the Marc VDS Ducati to complete an all-Ducati front row.

The rejuvenated Bimota project again showed encouraging pace, with Alex Lowes and Axel Bassani locking out fourth and fifth positions. Lorenzo Baldassarri, Tommy Bridewell, Xavi Vierge, Garrett Gerloff and six-time World Champion Jonathan Rea rounded out the top ten.
The qualifying session suggested Ducati would be the manufacturer to beat, although Bimota looked increasingly capable of challenging for podium honours.

Lecuona rode with confidence throughout, controlling the pace under pressure from championship leader Bulega to secure maximum points. Although Bulega was forced to settle for second place, his measured ride ensured another valuable championship haul.
Yari Montella continued his impressive rookie campaign by taking third, while Sam Lowes narrowly missed out on the podium with an excellent fourth-place finish in front of his home supporters. WorldSBK Donington Park 2026 Race Two – Bulega Hits Back
Championship contenders are defined by how they respond to disappointment, and Nicolo Bulega produced the perfect answer in Sunday’s second race. After narrowly missing victory on Saturday, the Italian controlled proceedings from the front to record another important victory and further extend his championship advantage.
Lecuona completed an outstanding weekend by finishing second, giving Aruba.it Racing Ducati another dominant one-two result, while Montella collected his second podium of the meeting with a well-earned third place. The Bimota pairing of Axel Bassani and Alex Lowes continued their strong form by finishing fourth and fifth respectively, underlining the rapid development of the KB998 package.

Garrett Gerloff enjoyed one of his best performances of the season in sixth, while Sam Lowes crossed the line seventh after another determined ride. Lorenzo Baldassarri, Xavi Vierge and Alvaro Bautista completed the top ten.

Ducati Continue to Set the Benchmark
Donington Park once again demonstrated Ducati’s dominance throughout the 2026 campaign. The factory Aruba.it Racing Ducati squad controlled the weekend, while several independent Ducati teams continued to challenge at the front of the field.
Montella’s consistency has made him one of the revelations of the season, and Sam Lowes continues to establish himself among the championship’s leading contenders.

Equally encouraging was the continued progress of the Bimota project. Alex Lowes and Axel Bassani regularly challenged the established order throughout the weekend, suggesting podium finishes—and perhaps victories—are only a matter of time.

British Fans Celebrate Booth-Amos Double in WorldSSP
Away from the WorldSBK headlines, British supporters had even more to celebrate in the FIM World Supersport Championship. Tom Booth-Amos enjoyed a perfect weekend aboard the PTR Triumph Factory Racing machine, claiming victory in both WorldSSP races in front of an ecstatic home crowd.

His first victory came in his landmark 100th WorldSSP start, making the achievement even more memorable, before returning on Sunday to complete a flawless double and strengthen his championship challenge. Booth-Amos combined excellent racecraft with intelligent tyre management and faultless consistency to keep his rivals behind throughout both encounters. The celebrations around the Donington paddock reflected just how popular the victories were with British fans.

The double success also marked a significant home result for Triumph, giving the Hinckley manufacturer a memorable weekend at its home round and providing another highlight during an outstanding few days of motorcycle racing.

Championship Standings After Donington Park
Bulega’s consistency throughout the weekend has increased his advantage at the top of the standings as the championship heads towards the second half of the season.

WorldSBK – Looking Ahead
Leaving Donington Park, Nicolo Bulega has strengthened his position at the top of the WorldSBK standings and continues to look every inch a future World Champion. Nevertheless, Iker Lecuona has shown he has the pace to challenge for victories, while Yari Montella’s remarkable consistency has established him as one of the stars of the 2026 season.

For British fans, the performances of Alex Lowes, Sam Lowes and Tommy Bridewell provided plenty of encouragement, while Tom Booth-Amos’ WorldSSP double ensured the home supporters had even more to celebrate.
If the Donington Park round proved anything, it is that the 2026 World Superbike Championship remains competitive but basically, its Nicolo Bulega to lose. Ducati may currently hold the upper hand, but with Bimota closing the gap and several riders capable of winning on any given weekend, the remainder of the season promises to deliver more thrilling battles before the title is decided.
